Abstract
This chapter discusses the historical and theoretical purpose and scope of the book. After a promising beginning at the dawn of the twenty-first century of sustained output growth and reduction in poverty and inequality, Latin America is again facing its historical challenges to development. In this sense, Raúl Prebisch’s challenge of building an analytical framework to interpret and orient development strategies for Latin America in the global capitalist economy, recognizing the center-periphery relations implied in its functioning, is still relevant.
