Abstract

Christof Thöny’s chapter tracks the transformation of the Western Austrian skiing area of Arlberg in the postwar period, using different primary and secondary sources including newspaper articles. Thöny focuses on the development of the Arlberg in the decades after World War II, especially during the phase in which the region grew into a ski resort because of the expanding technical infrastructure. Particular attention is paid to the development of skiing instruction since it played a significant role in the global diffusion of knowledge, culture, and practices in alpine skiing. This chapter also includes an analysis of the Arlberg brand, as the term “Arlberg” was initially used to denote its geographical location before its use in the twentieth century as a tourist brand.
