Abstract

This chapter presents the science of cartography and its relationship to career cartography. Living a career of purposefulness and intentionality can sustain long-term efforts in nursing directed at making a difference to benefit the lives of patients/recipients of the services. Career legacy cartography may also move the discipline and science forward as practitioners, educators, administrators, and researchers thoughtfully plan and achieve personal goals that benefit communities or populations. The components of career legacy cartography are discussed while being embedded in a portfolio. The career legacy mapping process for advanced practice nursing practitioners/aspirants is discussed in-depth pertinent to five dimensions of scholarship; discovery, integration, engagement, application and teaching. The practicalities of creating a portfolio step-by-step illustrated in a career legacy toolkit are provided.
