Part of the book series: Advanced Practice in Nursing ((APN))

Abstract

The spectrum of clinical scholarship and surrounding definitions of scholarship are discussed in light of the characteristics of Boyer’s dimensions of scholarship. Five dimensions of scholarship are presented aligned with the indicators pertinent to each dimension; engagement, integration, application, discovery and teaching. The associated characteristics of scholarship collectively are proposed as a platform that distinguishes scholarly activity of the advanced practice nursing practitioner and scholarship. The dimensions of patient centered care are linked to the identity of the nurse and the activities of the advanced practice nursing practitioner. Communities of practice connect the scholar and the scholarship of engagement and new ways of knowing can evolve in the context of reflexivity. Communities of Practice come to life when collaboration and thinking together happens with academics, advanced practice nursing practitioners and key stakeholders at the interface of clinical practice.
