Abstract
There is an acknowledgement that the scholarship of engagement, of discovery, of integration, of application and of teaching divides intellectual functions that are tied inseparably to each other. The terms scholarship, expertise, excellence are distinctly different. The term scholar is based on recognition that knowledge is acquired through research, through synthesis, through practice, and through teaching. The Pillars of Boyer’s scholarship are dynamic and interact forming an interdependent mosaic. The scholarship of practice is described as pertinent to transdisciplinary engagement and doctoral students’ perceived educational needs. The characteristics of clinical scholarship and scholarship are identified and suggestions put forward that could distinguish scholarship and scholarly activity from non-scholarly activity.
