Abstract

This chapter studies biomechanical biofeedback systems with augmented feedback that is provided by technical equipment, which are from this chapter on denoted simply as biofeedback systems; for clearer expression and better readability. Given a number of different options for the elements of sensing, processing, and feedback, implementations can vary greatly depending on the combination used. Biofeedback systems include sensors, processing devices, feedback devices or actuators, and users that are interconnected by communication channels; monitoring device and storage are optional. The operation of the biofeedback systems is described in the terms of operation modes: standby mode, guidance mode, and error detection mode. Feedback timing is closely related to signal and data processing timing, thus defining real-time biofeedback systems, block-processing biofeedback systems, and post-processing biofeedback systems.
