Abstract

This chapter presents how does UNESCO describes and conceptualizes Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a part of the lifelong learning process, which includes education, training, and skills development, and moves to the description and explanation of the actual UNESCO’s TVET strategy 2016–2021 and its three core areas: fostering youth employment and entrepreneurship, promoting equity and gender equality, and facilitating the transition to green economies and sustainable societies. UNESCO’s first historical TVET strategy for the period 2010–2015 that aimed mainly to upstream policy advice facilitated conceptual clarifications and acted as clearinghouse on TVET. The chapter continues describing UNESCO’s TVET normative instruments and its responsibility on monitoring the implementation of the instruments: the 1989 Convention on Technical and Vocational Education and the 2001 Revised Recommendation concerning Technical and Vocational Education. It concludes with a specific focus on UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, by describing its mandate, role, vision, and scope.
