Abstract

A 72-year-old man is admitted to the hospital with a presumptive diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. He is scheduled for bone marrow biopsy but has a platelet count of 7 K/μL (7000/μL). A type and screen sample (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid [EDTA] anticoagulant) is submitted to the blood bank along with a request for two units of apheresis platelets.
