Abstract
In this chapter, the characteristics of body image and body dissatisfaction in males with eating and weight disorders will be described: at the beginning, a broad description regarding biological, cultural, and social risk factors leading to body image concerns as well as body dissatisfaction in males will be dealt with.
Gender role endorsement, the role of media and ethnic influences on body image will be carefully treated as well as the characteristics of body dissatisfaction in male adolescents and their link to other eating disorders risk factors.
Other different variables involved in male body image dissatisfaction such as body weight, teasing related to body shape in teenage years, and perfectionism will be analyzed.
Specific aspects of body dissatisfaction in men suffering from eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder will be described carefully by drawing a parallelism with the same eating disorders in females.
Furthermore, the current tools for assessing body dissatisfaction in males in clinical settings will be explored.
Body size perception and body concerns in men with overweight or obesity will be taken into account.
