Abstract
Energy projects can bring many benefits, and if they are designed correctly, there are sometimes several in any particular project. There are also barriers to implementing energy projects and “myths” or outdated beliefs which tend to reduce interest in them. This chapter summarizes both benefits or drivers and barriers. Several examples of energy project decision-making are also presented. The balancing point between the benefits and the barriers is an appropriate understanding of the opportunities presented, and the ways in which those opportunities relate to the enterprise’s Purpose and internal organization. There are many opportunities to save energy and/or water and improve the enterprise at the same time. The enabling mechanism is the leadership and accountability to manage project implementation and continuing efforts. This chapter considers both the impediments to energy and water projects and the mechanisms that help them succeed.
