Abstract
This chapter traces the pros and cons of the self-determined, self-managed, DIY Neighborhood, a neighborhood where residents have an ability to define, control, and govern its affairs. Theoretically, the DIY neighborhood would seem to offer four advantages: efficiency, accountability, familiarity, and convenience. But while many believe as a matter of principle that neighborhoods should be empowered to control their own destinies, there are definitional, governance, and funding issues to deal with. It is also necessary to contend with the uncomfortable relationship between a neighborhood’s social homogeneity, its physical definition, and its ability to self-govern.
