Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the book’s purpose and historical significance. Given the decreasing numbers of African Americans entering and remaining in the field of education, the chapter offers an overview of the historical significance of African American educators. The need for both culturally relevant teachers and positive role models in diverse schools across the country is discussed, along with the significance of the educators and events chosen for selection in the subsequent chapters.
