Abstract

The Semantic Web is an extension to enable the semantic annotation of textual pages. It is a patch to the Web as it addresses the uplifting of the hypertextual system to a system of concepts, to words with well-defined meaning. In this chapter, we overview Semantic Web concepts and technologies and we relate them to the general evolution of the Web.

    The subsumption relation is a partial, reflexive, transitive, and antisymmetric relation. In plain terms, it means that if people are mammals, mammals are animals, and aliens exist, then people are animals (transitivity), people are people (reflexivity), not all animals are people (antisymmetry), and nothing can be said of the relation between people and aliens (partiality). Therefore, the subsumption relation is also subsumed by other relations, including itself, hence the title of this section.
