Abstract

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a recording of electrical activity of the heart. It is performed as a part of routine evaluation for patients presenting with medical issues. It is a simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive test yet can reveal a significant amount of information if interpreted appropriately. On the cardiology consult service, one will routinely encounter abnormal ECGs. It is important to be able to recognize which patterns are clinically insignificant and which are life-threatening, requiring immediate action. The most common and the most serious ECG patterns are briefly described below. It is recommended that readers refer to more specific manuals for further details.
