Promoting Engagement Through Participatory Social Practices in Next Generation Social Media Contexts

This chapter focuses on the current and potential use of social and new media communication practices to promote educational experiences that are engaging and motivating. Considering the potential for increasing engagement and motivation among students, this understanding should pique the interest of all educators. We can now easily create scenarios in which students are compelled to co-construct the community and context in which they learn. This chapter introduces the current landscape of opportunities for social learning experiences as well as a vision for how these experiences may be greatly enhanced in conjunction with these trends in technological development. The author recognizes that innovative pedagogical developments is necessary in order to realize the potential of these advancements. Toward this goal, suggestions for teacher preparation are addressed.
