Abstract
The following chapter examines issues relating to dating and relationships of people with disabilities in the context of Jamaican society. Participants with disabilities shared their experiences regarding the barriers encountered with dating and relationships in a society that does not give credence to their personhood. The chapter outlines such barriers as the negative attitudes towards disability, being considered nonsexual, and the impact of the dominant dance hall culture and how it affects the perception and attitude of society towards disability. Despite increased levels of awareness to disability, there needs to be more emphasis on educating the society on disability to effect a change in attitude.
