Abstract
Hypertension is the commonest medical disorder in the pregnant population worldwide. It accounts for significant global morbidity and mortality and will also account for a significant number of preterm deliveries (15%). The incidence appears to be increasing due to increasing maternal age, obesity and women with pre-existing medical disorders such as diabetes, essential hypertension and renal disease. Antenatal management focuses around early detection, treatment with appropriate agents in pregnancy, maternal and fetal monitoring and planned delivery. Despite improvements in outcome for these women there are still women who die as a result of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and in a significant number of these patients there is evidence of substandard care.
