Abstract
Cardiac disease is currently the major cause of death associated with pregnancy in the United Kingdom. This places a premium on giving accurate preconception advice and ensuring management during pregnancy which is consistent with current standards. This is best done by the multidisciplinary team including an obstetrician, cardiologist, anaesthetist, midwife, and cardiac nurse. The principles of management focus on minimising avoidable stress in the pregnancy, particularly during delivery. It is essential to respect patient autonomy, even when they make decisions about their care which carry avoidable risk.
