Abstract
Over one in four pregnancies are induced in the UK. The rationale, indications, methods, advantages and disadvantages of induction of labour are reviewed. Modern induction methods have become increasingly safe and acceptable to mothers and do not result in increased medical intervention. In fact, the converse is true—lower emergency Caesarean section rates are observed in induced compared to expectantly managed pregnancies. Common areas of litigation are reviewed and the issue of whether all women should be offered induction of labour at term discussed.
