Abstract
A chaperone is an independent person, appropriately trained whose role is to observe the examination/procedure undertaken by the doctor/health care professional to assist in maintaining the appropriate doctor patient relationship. In addition to intimate examinations there are several other situations where chaperones are beneficial including when examining vulnerable or anxious patients, patients examined by trainee doctors and where religious and cultural issues may affect the physical exam.
