Abstract
The socioeconomic profile of medical students in the UK has remained heavily skewed towards those from advantaged backgrounds over decades, whilst representation of women and people from ethnic minority communities has increased substantially (SEEG Selecting for Excellence: Final report. http://www.medschools.ac.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/Selecting-for-Excellence-Final-Report.pdf. Accessed 24 July 2017, 2014). A high level, broad-based, national project—‘Selecting for Excellence’—was initiated by the UK Medical Schools Council in 2013, and recommended wide-ranging changes in attraction and selection of entrants to medical schools. Implementation has been led by a national Selection Alliance with representation from all public UK medical schools. This chapter reviews the progress and challenges over the first two years of a six-year programme to widen participation in medicine to people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
