Makiguchi, Ikeda, and Gandhi: A Brief Comparative Study

Abstract

The focus of this chapter is educational, political, and comparative. This study engages with the Asian thinkers Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Daisaku Ikeda, and Mahatma Gandhi’s core ideas, creative strategies, behaviors, modes of thinking, and beliefs as active protagonists in their respective countries. It reflects on how these thinkers were all motivated to take positive action based on their ideas and values. However, their fates have been dissimilar. One of the reasons for this is whether or not their ideas have been used creatively and directly confront educational challenges and political processes. Enhancing criticality, creativity that can contribute to social-self actualization and bold collective efforts are lessons from this study for the discourse and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) led practice of learning to live together within global citizenship education.
