Abstract

Portland cement concrete (PCC) has been used in the United States for over 100 years for various highway and bridge barrier shapes as well as tunnel bench walls and wall liners. For installations where corrosive materials and environments are not a factor, PCC is a viable option. However, in most uses exposure to moisture and road deicing chemicals has led to premature corrosion of embedded steel reinforcing results in spalling of the concrete cover. Rehabilitating existing deteriorated concrete elements is a significant issue both from a cost stand point as well as the time required for demolition and replacement.
