Abstract

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures of industrial installations may be exposed to various chemical solutions due to accidental or common causes (tank failure, piping leaks, control mishandling, etc.). Besides chemical tanks specifically designed for long-term storage, surrounding concrete retention basins are generally not protected properly against unexpected exposure to aggressive solutions. This raises concerns for environmental protection against potential effluent leaks. This work presents a general industrial case study of protective coatings’ chemical resistance assessment and an economically optimal strategy to enhance RC structures’ chemical protection. An experimental study of strong acid resistance evaluation has been conducted on various polymer coatings. The results led to a multi-material approach for chemical resistance retrofitting of existing RC structures.
