Marital Dialogue in extremis

This chapter begins with marriage sequences that bring the dead back to speak with the living: Thomas Hardy’s Poems of 1912–13 and Ted Hughes’s post-mortem dialogue with Sylvia Plath in Birthday Letters. The second half of the chapter looks at two late-twentieth-century divorce sequences that depict the marital dialogue in extremis as a couple dance, a war game, and/or a sporting event: Louise Glück’s Meadowlands and Anne Carson’s The Beauty of the Husband.
