Abstract
Ancient popular songs carry a community’s cultural memory. Generation after generation, translators, musicians, historians, take charge of actualizing their form and meaning and refocusing their local, regional or national embedding. During European Romanticism, the rediscovery, description and publication of folklore added new functions, such as challenging the prevalent literary and musical models inherited from Classicism. What is less known, however, is that smaller language communities mobilised popular songs in view of supporting claims for recognition of their language and literary patrimony. D’hulst shows how Flemish folk songs spread nationally and internationally during the long nineteenth century with precisely that aim. He describes a wide variety of transfer techniques, including translation, by which networks of mediators promoted old Flemish poetry and music in Belgium, France and Germany.
