Abstract
von Salomon’s Outlaws is another text ambiguously straddling the fact/fiction divide and also a best-seller. It is about the author’s post-war experiences as a right-wing terrorist, intended to justify such actions in the name of patriotism, in a period of peace which was “the war continued by other means”. The analysis focuses on the narrative techniques which allow the author’s propaganda purposes to take the form of a narrative of personal experiences. The reception of the book was fundamentally divided along the lines of the political divisions noted above, but contained significant elements of ambiguity.
Page references here are to the English translation. However, this translation is far from reliable, and there are many passages that are either omitted or heavily reduced by summary. In many places, I have had to substitute my own translation. In these cases, the page references are to the equivalent passages in the English edition.
