Abstract

The Norton Cru affair. Ten years after the end of the war, the French American academic Jean Norton Cru wrote a critical bibliography of French war literature, which included fundamental, factually based criticisms of two of the most successful and famous war memoirs, by Barbusse and Dorgelès. Its publication provoked a literary quarrel, in the course of which fundamental French attitudes towards the memory of the war became apparent.
