Abstract

The Introduction presents the topic of the book in its various contexts, and, in particular, the features of the Great War that were historically novel: its geographical extent, the range of persons involved, the range of writings that came from the war, both factual and fictional, and some of the reasons for the extensive documentation available about the war. It presents the method of analysis to be used, specifically the relationship between ‘textual strategies’ and audience reception, derived from Wolfgang Iser, and considers the war memoirs in relationship to the distinguishing features of autobiography in general.
