Abstract

Pulmonary embolism following deep vein thrombosis is one of the most common natural causes of death. Occasionally, the question of age of the thrombosis and thromboembolism arises, meaning that possible thrombus organization in the vessel wall needs to be investigated. However, other embolisms also play a role in forensic medicine: fat and bone marrow embolisms following previous trauma, such as decollement, air embolism following the opening of neck veins by a deep knife incision, embolisms in i.v. drug abuse with foreign-body pulmonary granulomas, and the rare amniotic fluid embolism. Iatrogenic embolisms, such as bone or cement embolism during total hip endoprosthesis or the embolic spread of rinsing fluid during prostate surgery, are seldom. Extremely rare embolisms include, e.g., silicone embolism syndrome (SES), projectile embolism following a bullet wound, and tumor embolism. Most of the abovementioned embolisms can only be detected microscopically.
