Popigai Impact Structure and its Diamond-Bearing Rocks

Part of the book series: Impact Studies ((IMPACTSTUD))

Abstract

Impact diamonds were found in all kinds of impactites and in placers within and around of the Popigai impact structure. They are the result of a solid-phase transition of graphite under the impulse compression. They form paramorphoses after graphite, inheriting its morphology, and represent complex polycrystalline intergrowths of nano-sized crystallites of cubic and, probably, hexagonal phases of carbon. In many respects, impact diamonds differ from diamonds found in kimberlites, but they also have a high hardness, even exceeding kimberlite ones. The isotopic composition of carbon of impact diamonds is similar to that of graphite carbon.
