Abstract
The mobility megatrend is transforming entire industries and reshaping demands for cross-industry and cross-product solutions. The ability to adapt previous business models to the dynamic technological development will play a decisive role in the future automotive competition. Exceptionally Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility systems (CCAM) which are based on C2X- and/or 5G-communication will at this moment be powerful key technologies. To implement CCAM, however, the automotive industry and the telecommunication industry are both facing white spots in their strategic competencies. In the case of CCAM, the automotive and telecommunication industries have been following different technology strategies, while business use case and ease of use require a mixed technology approach. To successfully implement CCAM and to create new maneuvering room against competition, players of the automotive and telecommunication industry hence have to overcome their lack of strategic competencies by forming co-operations. However, as several barriers and isolation mechanisms exist, new co-operation models for automotive and telecommunication industries are required. Such inter-industrial co-operation is simplified with the aid of the Institutional Role Model (IRM). The IRM assigns essential economic roles to the involved institutions taking into account a “neutral view” on performance readiness and performance acceptance. The creation of a transparent IRM can establish a fair distribution mechanism among the various players so that sustainable co-operation projects and service products can appear. The IRM-process enables greater space for action as well as time advantages for the realignment of previous business models to new megatrends for both the automotive and the telecommunications industries.
