Abstract
The lack of linear progress in the development of family life services in Ireland is detailed, and the key organising principles of social policy formation and implementation are critiqued. Demographic contours of contemporary Irish family life set the scene for an exploration of the fit between social structures, family wellbeing and service provision. Family life practitioner’s professional tasks, responsibilities and educational/training backgrounds are explored and discussed. This chapter closes with an appraisal of some of the key family life services challenges facing Irish family life educators in their efforts to promote a family-centred society.
