Abstract
It has been suggested that social workers concerned with immigrants and immigration have primarily focused their efforts on psychosocial issues of recent immigrants, including their needs and circumstances at different stages of the immigration process, and how best to address those needs. However, social workers may provide critical assistance to immigrants not only through the provision of psychosocial services but also by assisting with applications for immigration and other benefits. This chapter provides a brief overview of the legal parameters in which social workers function in assisting clients in their efforts to obtain immigration and public service benefits. Various roles for social workers are also explored.
