Abstract

The Burgergemeinde Bern is responsible for the Museum’s operation and financing. By reason of a good collaboration with the University of Bern the Museum’s scientific activity is partially financed by the Canton of Bern.

The collections of the Paleontology Division have their roots in 1894. The oldest fossil objects now at the NMBE were acquired in 1803. An important part of the collections is the “Types and figured specimens collection”, a regional collection with material from the Alps, the Molasse Basin, and the Jura mountains.

Focus for research and collecting is now, not at least thanks to the donation of a palaeontological collection of the private Fondation Paléontologique Jurassienne (FPJ, Glovelier), on projects in the Swiss Jura.
