Abstract
The Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim—or in short, ‘rem’—are a prominent venue for exhibitions and a significant center of research in Germany. The rem communicate and present past and present cultural history at four facilities, the Zeughaus Museum, the World Culture Museum, the Bassermannhaus Museum of Music and Fine Arts, and the Schillerhaus Museum with a redesigned exhibition since 2014. The Bassermannhaus additionally furnishes space for contemporary photography in the ZEPHYR gallery.
What is more, research units such as the Curt-Engelhorn Art and Cultural History Center and the Curt Engelhorn Archaeometry Center, consisting of the Materials Analysis Laboratory and the Klaus Tschira Archaeometry Center at the University of Heidelberg, are part of the rem.
A total of 12,600 qm of gallery space for exhibitions and over 1.2 million objects make the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen the largest municipally supported museum complex in southern Germany. In addition to research, the museum’s work particularly concentrates on the presentation of research findings in high visibility exhibitions.
