Abstract
The collection of the Geological Survey North Rhine-Westphalia comprises various subcollections, of which the most important are an extensive core library, a regional geology collection, an organic petrology collection and a palaeontological collection. The latter focuses on micropalaeontology (foraminifers, ostracodes, conodonts), palaeobotany (Pennsylvanian of the Aachen and Ruhr district) and palynology (sediment, processed residues, slides). The palaeontological collection is maintained e. g. to assist in geological mapping programmes and exploration projects. It also serves as a reference for various regional biostratigraphic zonations. The curation of palynological material, especially of old slides prepared with glycerine jelly, requires special precautions. The storage concept for palynological residues and slides at the Geological Survey North Rhine-Westphalia is outlined in brief.
