Abstract
The geological collection of the Ruhr Museum in Essen/Germany contains approximately 400,000 objects with the main focus being on palaeontology. Fossil plants from the Pennsylvanian wetlands and the peat swamps of the Ruhr Basin; marine invertebrates from the Münster Cretaceous Basin, and Pleistocene mammals represent the local geology, fossil plants and (mostly) invertebrates from the Paleozoic Rhenish Slate Mountains and from the Palaeogen/Neogene Lower Rhine Embayment the nearer regional geology. Fossils from many classic German and European locations and spectacular objects from many countries in and outside Europe enable the Ruhr Museum to be an educational institution for the general public. The broadly based historical collection of the Industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp (1854–1902) contains attractive fossils from famous sites worldwide. In 2015 the geo-scientific collections of the Fuhlrott-Museum Wuppertal were transferred into the ownership of the Ruhr Museum Foundation. The Ruhr Museum is a collecting partner in cooperation with the department for palaeontological preservation of archaeological monuments of the Rhineland Regional Council (Landschaftsverband Rheinland; LVR). The permanent personnel include two scientists, 1 preparator, and a half-time biologist for educational programs.
