Abstract

In this chapter, Jestice provides a much-needed analysis of the German throne crisis of 984, answering the thorny historiographical question of why and how the dowager empresses Theophanu and Adelheid were able to assume the regency of Germany in that year. Its novel argument highlights the threat to the dynasty posed by Duke Henry the Quarrelsome of Bavaria, who gained control of the child king Otto III and how the power and prestige with which the empresses had been carefully vested enabled them to intervene successfully to preserve Otto III’s throne.
