Abstract
In this chapter, I trace the role of education for global understanding in Japan in the current geography curricula and explain future changes in geography education related to global understanding beginning in 2022. Currently in Japan, education for global understanding is taught with different emphases in primary, middle, and high school. The next national curriculum standards will be introduced gradually beginning with primary schools in 2020. Geography in senior high school will be made compulsory starting in 2022. The new standards will emphasize global understanding and international cooperation. Therefore, geography will play a more important role in providing opportunities for students to understand many phenomena and issues in the world and in considering what we can and should do as global citizens.
