Particulated Cartilage Auto- and Allograft

Abstract

Particulating or mincing articular cartilage allows the chondrocytes to escape their lacunae and migrate. The freed chondrocytes are able to multiply and form new extracellular matrix. Over time, the new chondrocyte/matrix construct matures into hyaline-like cartilage. This technique has both autograft (noncommercial) and allograft (DeNovo® NT, Zimmer, Warsaw, IN) applications. Positive animal outcomes have been followed by encouraging clinical outcomes for chondral and osteochondral applications with repair tissue being a mixture of hyaline cartilage and fibrocartilage. The position for these techniques in the cartilage restoration/repair algorithm is under investigation, but it appears to be similar to current cell therapy techniques.
