Abstract

Sleep is an important aspect of physical and mental health across the life span. Physiological and pathological changes associated with aging are among the underlying mechanisms in sleep-wake disorders in late life. A combination of age-associated changes in sleep architecture, primary sleep disorders, psychiatric disorders, systemic medical conditions, and/or medication effects accounts for most of the sleep-wake disorders in older adults. This section reviews diagnostic approaches, risk factors, and treatment approaches for common sleep-wake disorders in older adults.
