Jimi Hendrix and Black-Transnational Popular Music’s Global Gender and Sexualized Histories

This chapter contends that Hendrix, though commonly thought of as the quintessentially hetero-normative rock star, can be seen and heard as a queer, or sexually interstitial, global gender and sexual symbol. It argues that Hendrix enters a tradition of queer black-transnational representations through his unconventional and “freakish” image and performative disposition. This chapter centers Hendrix’s global gender and sexual visual-cultural depictions, linking Hendrix to additional black-transnational popular musicians’ global gender and sexual histories and representational struggles. This chapter also argues that Hendrix’s performative demeanor exhibited an unabashed sexuality and subversion and participation in the maintenance of fixed hetero-normative global gender and sexual roles in rock music and beyond. Complicating his fixed hetero-normative image, this chapter notes how Hendrix made flexible the strict divisions separating male and female genders and queer and straight sexualities.
