Advances in Indian Earthquake Engineering and Seismology

Abstract

In India, instrumental seismology started more than a century ago, with the first seismological observatory of the country with analog equipment set up at Alipore (Kolkata) by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in 1898. Since then lot of development has taken place in all the components of instrumental seismology, i.e., sensing the true ground motion, recording of ground motion with synchronized timing, and networking for real-time reliable communication, due to the advancement in development of digital technology. Concept of networking has also changed, and several seismic networks are now in operation with different objectives and making use of different networking concepts. All these aspects are briefly discussed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is the nodal agency for monitoring of earthquake activity in and around the country and operating several networks for monitoring of local, regional, and large-magnitude undersea earthquakes capable of generating tsunamis. Among these, a local network for precise monitoring of earthquake activity in the northeast region of the country has recently been set up. Besides IMD, seismic networks are also being operated by several institutions with specific objectives. Some of these networks are also briefly discussed.
