Successes and Failures of Agricultural Cooperatives and Credit Societies
In this chapter we discuss in detail the outcomes of efforts made in support of China’s agricultural economy and agricultural finance facilities. We examine the progress of the cooperative movement, and make a determination as to its overall effectiveness. This includes the ideals of progress, and the complexities brought about by the Japanese war and hyper-inflation that goes along with war. We outline the evolution and outcomes of credit cooperation. Here we provide a general overview of credit cooperative development and then drill down into three separate time frames, 1924–36, 1937–45, and 1945–49. We need to segregate the three time periods because the conditions faced on the ground differed markedly between the time periods before and after the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war in September 1937, and the civil war period between 1945 and 1949.
