Abstract
In this chapter, Caroline Campbell reflects on how her creative venture into design, illustration and multimodal storytelling, which prompted her to further investigate the screened book as an emerging format for communicating powerful ideas to junior readers aged 8–10. Campbell discusses how her initial exploration into multimodal storytelling for the tablet shaped the conceptual design and creative production of the self-authored case study. She explains how the knowledge gained in designing and producing the seminal screened book Josie and the Whales (2015) helped inform this multimodal work, which, while designed for tablet reading, is conceived as a stepping stone towards story-making for the smartphone reader.
