Abstract
This chapter introduces the text, the core ideas and lays out the focus of the study by drawing on key moments in the history of Scottish, Welsh and Irish nationalism. It highlights the idea that certain societal conditions can are necessary for terrorist movements to gain popular support, and explains why popular support is central to the successes of a terrorist group. The introduction concludes by setting out the parameters of this study and detailing the approach each chapter takes.
