Abstract
This chapter looks at non-state actors and the promotion of press freedom. In particular, it examines the efforts of NGOs that work on behalf of press freedom issues, but also looks at what role the media itself play with regard to the press freedom debate. The chapter also makes the case that anti-press freedom measures are indirectly supported by Western publics that seem to have lost their trust in the press as an independent political institution aimed at representing the voice of the people.
