Major global changes that have occurred over time are generally grouped into geological periods. For human beings, these periods represent quite unimaginably long intervals of time and they extend back to equally unconceivable ages that are difficult to grasp. Because humans, in their contemporary environment, have a life expectancy of about 80 years, it is difficult to understand and relate to a period lasting for millions or billions of years.
