6 Communicating the Environment Is a “Public Right and Duty”

  • Maurizio Abbati

To know how to communicate an Environmental message with purposes of pubic interest implies the cooperation of “more communicators” mirroring at improving the social role of communication by reducing sensibly the risks of misunderstanding or misinterpretations as a result of “noises” of different origin. This applies both to the “external” interest addressed to a big public and both to the “internal” interest, addressed to subjects working within an organization. The particular complexity of the Environmental matter and the increasing demand for its information on the part of the public opinion, has created new rights and services of Environmental Participated Communication with the citizens and stakeholders. Communicating the Environment has therefore taken different forms meant to deepen the knowledge of the various themes from different points of view and allow the parties to interact and express their opinions. How can we communicate the Environmental issues at an institutional level? The Reporting, Information and Communication Desks, the facilitation techniques and peer review are just a few examples to ensure the efficacy of a suitable public Communication Plan. Common denominator: a cooperative approach aimed at eco-responsible decisions and behaviours concerning the local and global community.
